Well it would seem that Will Wright and his dream team are not infallible after all. From what I have been reading on numerous forums and other blogs across the internet, and based off of my own experiences, it would seem that the recently released spore patch works only part of the time. I’ve read both sides; either the patch works or it doesn’t. Personally, I don’t know why the patch wouldn’t work for ALL computers. Fiercemudcrab’s game runs fine with the new patch, and many others as well. But why does mine not work? Why does my computer, which surpasses all of the recommended system requirements, not seem to run the patch?
So what happens to my Spore with the patch? I have checked, and it seems that my problems are shared by many. For one, the opening screen doesn’t display any planets to play. I am taunted by the message that says “Pick a planet to start!” I have to mouse over the entire galaxy to find my planet, and then the planet is only a grid. When I finally find my planet and load it up, the problems continue. The sound only works one out of every four times. If your Spore is like mine, it takes a couple of minutes to start the game in the first place! So I’m walking around with my creature, and I happen across a seemingly empty nest. I walk over to see, because I haven’t made anything extinct yet. Then I hear growling and roaring, and I start getting attacked by INVISIBLE CREATURES. I run away, but am getting chased by angry creatures that I can’t see. Then the game crashes.
What I ended up doing was uninstalling and reinstalling the game. I’m only playing version 1.0 until EA comes out with a patch for their patch. It’s not so bad, since 1.0 is pretty stable and mostly bug-free on my machine. I guess a game as complex as Spore requires numerous patches as bugs are discovered. I wish they would have made a fix that doesn’t end up breaking the game for me, and for many others.
